Normanton Park Pavilion and Activity Centre
The work involved completely demolishing the internal areas of the pavilion and forming communal areas as well as toilet facilities suitable for disabled access. The external works included repairs to the roof, clock tower and paved areas. Attached to the pavilion is a building that was converted into an activity centre. This was a building made up of two separate rooms joined by a dividing wall. The general work content consisted of the removal of the existing roofs and replacing them with others pitched 90 degrees to the original, rebuild external walls, remove internal walls, create WC with access for disabled and others, create office area and kitchen, renew concrete floors and generally refurbish and decorate. This was a high profile project undertaken in conjunction with Derby City Council, which was formally opened by the Mayor of Derby in 2005 and is a fine testament to the type of work undertaken by the Company.
Wetherby Day Center
Highfield Joinery and Building Services Ltd have carried out many projects in public buildings that are occupied whilst the work takes place. This project was however recognised as requiring a high degree of care due to the fact of the site being occupied by adults with learning difficulties. Following the award of the project, detailed planning of the work was undertaken with Derby City Council, Jacobs Babtie and the management team responsible for the running of the facility. The work was then successfully carried out to a very tight programme without any unplanned disruption to the operation of the site and with no Health and Safety issues affecting the operatives, staff or general public on the site.
The works mainly consisted of refurbishment of 4 areas in the centre. This involved the demolition of walls and associated fittings in order to create new toilet facilities and changing rooms. The work also included electrical and mechanical works to complete the installation as well as the installation of new ceilings, floor coverings and final decoration. The electrical work included updating the fire alarm facility required access to all parts of the building. However, it was possible, with careful planning, to isolate the main areas of work to prevent access by the personnel attending the facility. As with many such projects variations to the work occurred however they were all completed and managed within the contract programme.
Reigate Sure Start Scheme
Operating as a main contractor to the Derby City Council various building works were undertaken in the construction of an extension to a school and the refurbishment and renovation of existing classrooms for the purpose of the project. There was a major part of this work involving ground works to form the foundations and underground works for drains and paths. Once again this was a high profile project requiring work closely with architects and the local authorities.
Brackensdale Primary School
This was a similar project to Reigate Sure Start Scheme and involved the building of two new custom built classrooms with associated toilet and disabled toilet facilities. The works ranged from groundworking, bricklaying and joinery. The exterior of the building was clad with Glasal panels, the supply and installation of which was part of the work of the Company. The internal joinery work required the supply and installation of kitchen units and doors to the architect’s specifications. The project was completed in 2007 and officially opened by the authorities.
Chellaston Infants School
Operating as the main contractor to Derby City Council on this Victorian building, under supervision of contract administrators Faithful and Gould. The works involved the removal of the entire roof covering to allow various timber repairs to the roof structure. Preservation and insulation works were carried out. With extensive work to the front elevation involving new decorative barge boards. New boundary walls were lowered and rebuilt and the whole of the school building was re- pointed all under the guidance of The English Heritage.
