About Highfield Joinery & Building Services Ltd

 

Highfield Joinery and Building Services Ltd was formed as a limited company in 2003, having operated from 1987 by the founder and Managing Director of the company, Mark Rowland. The business had however expanded significantly under the guidance of Mark Rowland resulting in the need to create the limited company that operates today.

The work undertaken varies in value from a few hundred pounds to in excess of £500k and we pride ourselves on being able to adjust to all our customers’ needs, whether they are a public corporation or a private individual.

 

The service we provide covers all trades within the building industry including joinery, brickwork, plastering, groundwork's, plumbing, electrical and finishes such as flooring and decorating. In the majority of cases we directly employ the trades that are required. We however recognise the need to use specialist contractors for certain elements of the work and have built up a portfolio of highly qualified traders over the years. As our business is situated in Derby, we pride ourselves on using local tradesman and contractors from the area. We are however quite amenable to source in other areas if the specialist skill or programme dictates.

 

In the early years the business was formed around working for the Local Authority, for which approval had been successfully achieved. This entailed working closely with Derby City Council in the refurbishment of schools and other public buildings and parks. As the business developed that relationship has continued with the projects increasing in value and complexity. Complimentary to that work, however, has been extensions and other building projects on private dwellings.

 

In an endeavour to continue to grow the business markets have been developed with other customers, mainly in the public domain. This includes Derbyshire Fire and Rescue and the NHS. In order to secure this work accreditation to Construction line was achieved in 2006.

 

The company is very much family run.  The two Directors are a man and wife team, namely Mark and Jennifer Rowland.  Whilst Mark has the knowledge of the trade, Jennifer is a qualified accountant which ensures a close control of the financial aspects of the business securing its long term security and development.  In addition there are several other family members that either work on the administrative aspects or actually in the trade as fully qualified operatives.

 

The aim of the business is to offer a service from project conception through to building completion and hand over.  Although design expertise is not carried out within the company, access to design and architect facilities is available that can be utilised towards the development of any project.

 

Health and Safety is not only recognised as a legal responsibility but is also considered as a core competence within the culture of the Company.  All operatives have attended Passport to Safety courses through which they have gained full accreditation.  The Company expects and encourages all our sub-contractors to engender the same discipline and culture in their own businesses.  The Company has been involved in many projects which come under the banner of the CDM regulations, mainly as the Principle Contractor, and believe they have acquitted themselves admirably in the support of the Planning Supervisor.  In addition projects have been taken on where with responsibility for all activities under CDM and hence direct contact with the Health and Safety Executive has been maintained in meeting all legal obligations.
